Tzum 2019 Aos Si
Sangiovese is a chameleon and is sensitive to the inputs of both the site and the winemaker. In its Tuscan homeland there are examples as ethereal as the greatest burgundies and others dark, dense and powerful as Napa Valley Cabernet. This is the second vintage from our half-acre parcel and we are still learning its ways. The parcel is interplanted with over 20 different heirloom clones of Sangiovese, Sagrantino, Aleatico, Cilliegiolo, Canaiolo and Trebbiano. The inclusion of the other varieties increases resiliency and complexity. It also provides additional pathways for flavor that express themselves according to the vintage. In 2018, the Aleatico component spoke strongly and that wine was particularly floral and exotic in speaking about the dark and powerful nature of the vintage. The wine from 2019 is far more delicate. The wine is pale in color, 11% alcohol and the texture is extremely fine with fluid gradations between the elements that provide texture. It occupies the space in between Pinot Noir and Grenache.
