Hiyu 2018 Aura, Columbia Gorge Red Wine
Aura is a one-acre parcel of Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris in roughly equal proportion. They are planted on a slope just above the tasting room. In the past this has been made as a macerated white wine, but in 2018 we made it as a red wine for the first time… sort of. We made three picks from the parcel and each of these picks were fermented on the skins for different amounts of time: 10 days, 24 days and 100 days. They were aged in barrel separately and then bottled together after aging in barrel for 17 month. This tastes like a theoretical cross between Emmanuel Rouget Echezeaux, Radikon Pinot Gris and Ganevat J’En Veux. It’s also fairly similar to the 2018 Halo “Spring Ephemeral”… but slightly more layered and nuanced with the blending of different components and longer elevage.
