2019 Avellana “Spring Ephemeral”

2019 Avellana “Spring Ephemeral”

This is a half-acre parcel in the steepest portion of the site adjacent to the western forest. This is the warmest part of the vineyard, the most sheltered from the wind and the soils contain more volcanic red clay than the silver sand that is found elsewhere on the farm. The planting is inspired by old vineyards on the border between Eastern and Western Europe. Blaufrankisch is the dominant grape, but it also contains some of the more exotic cultivars that occupy these borderlands: Kadarka, Pignolo, Schiopettino, Corvina, Gamay, Vugava and many clones of heirloom Zinfandel. The wine straddles the stylistic line between Burgundy and the Northern Rhône; it has the delicate characteristics of the former, and the exotic spice notes of the latter. Blaufrankisch also ripens halfway between the two. Based on this we had a hunch that it would ripen perfectly on our site and during the first two vintages that has proven to be the case.
