2018 Tzum Atavus, Columbia Gorge Red Wine
The red wine is made from old vine Pinot Noir planted in the eastern side of the upper field. One of the most remarkable qualities of the site is its ability to render wines that evoke amplitude and texture while retaining surreal levels of acidity. These characteristics come from the sites combination of very high altitude, absolutely perfect exposure, gradient and vines planted in the 60’s. It is possible to pick very late here while maintaining freshness and we were able to take full advantage of that in 2018. The result is similar to some of the early, vintage bottlings of “The May” and one of our most hedonistic wines to date. In addition to its flamboyant textural qualities this wine is also hauntingly aromatic. It is redolent of the very exotic oriental spices that whole cluster Pinot Noir is famous for.
