2018 Rosé "Spring Ephemeral"
This is from a 10 acre site we farm where the Gorge transitions to desert. We picked some of the Grenache and Zinfandel early when there were still a few green and pink berries in the clusters. We placed the intact clusters in open topped bins, tread by foot to release a little juice and macerated for five days. After the maceration, just as the fermentation was ready to begin in earnest we pressed directly into old barrels where the wine fermented and aged for eight months.
The wine is peach colored; a glowing, fuzzy mix of orange and pink. It’s very fresh, but organic and natural, not the fresh of industry or stainless steel, but of standing in the desert during a rain. It smells like hibiscus and watermelon. Its lush but also salty. A wine with the kind of ease that lends itself to all-day drinking; just enough concentration to be compelling, but without having to think to hard about it. The complexities kick into high gear on the finish, where its desert identity fully reveals itself as flourishes of cracked pepper, tahini, lavender and sage.
